Living in the US makes one feel free - free to do anything, free to live, free to love, free from traditions. While this is true, there are still many practices done during wedding that renders this memorable event with a distinct American touch. Here are some:
Starting from the engagement, Americans can think of unique ways to personalize their wedding. As there really isn't any engagement tradition, the more unique the marriage proposal is done, the better.
For most wedding preparations, the engaged couple visits their parents to inform them of their recent engagement.
At times, the engaged couple hosts an engagement party. The engagement party costs less than a wedding reception since most of the time, the menu will only include cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Therefore, if the couple is on a tight budget, they can just invite more guests to the engagement party if they plan to limit the number of guests during the wedding.
Most wedding preparations have a bridal shower given by the maid of honor and the bridesmaids. The groom may also have a bachelor party the night before the wedding but he has to be careful not to drink too much.

Well, don't sweat it! Here is a list of great tips that might make the job go a little more smoothly.
1.) Do your bridal shower thank-you cards before the wedding even gets here. Since, your bridal shower is your first order of business, it will be easier to write the thank-you cards while the shower is fresh in your mind. Have someone at your shower keep a list of gifts and gift-givers so you can easily identify who gave you what, and you could even pass around blank envelopes for everyone to jot their address on, because that will definitely save you a lot of time when you get ready to send them. You should also send them out at least ten days after the shower. 2.) When opening wedding gifts, have someone make a list. Just like at your bridal shower, whether you open them right after the ceremony, at a post-wedding brunch, or when you get home from your honeymoon, you should recruit someone to make a list of gifts and gift givers, especially when you are dealing with that many cards and gifts. 3.) You should never use a pre-printed wedding thank-you card. Thank-you cards should be hand written and should be very personal. They should reflect on each individual gift. 4.) Set aside time to write your thank-you cards. We know you're a busy newlywed! Your busy setting up house, and planning your housewarming party, but you should commit to set aside time everyday to complete your wedding thank-you cards. Try to get away somewhere quiet for an hour or two and give yourself a goal, like for instance you could say, "Tonight I am going to complete twenty thank-you cards". As you complete them, check them off your list, so you'll know where you left off. 5.) Print out a second sheet of your invitation labels. This will make addressing your thank-you cards a breeze! If you haven't created a list of addresses and labels, you should go ahead and do it, because this will save you from major writer's cramp when you get ready to embark on this tedious task. 6.) You should include your new return address on all thank-you cards. This will give all of your friends and family the opportunity to add it to their address books. 7.) Divide up the task with your new hubby! A great idea is to sit down and write your thank-you cards with your new spouse. Maybe he could write the ones to his side of the family and you could write the ones to your side of the family. You could also make it a little competitive! Make it a race to see who can get the most done in one sitting. But, don't race if you don't think either of you will write nice, formal thank-you cards because you have made it into a competition. 8.) Wedding thank-you cards should be sent out no later than two weeks after returning from your honeymoon. You don't really realize how important they are, until your great-aunt so-and-so mentions it to your mother that she never received a thank-you card from you.
So, as you can see, getting started isn't as hard as you think. All you need to do is cuddle up on the couch with your gift list and sheet of address labels, and just get started. You will be surprised after the first one or two how easy it is to get into it, and that after only a few hours

Wedding Gown - This was my favorite find! My cousin happens to be a model and she had modeled a wedding gown one evening and she was able to keep the dress. She gave it to me for FREE! Ask around and see if anyone is not interested in their old wedding dress, some women do not care to keep it and you can easily get it altered and made just the way you like!
Tuxes - We found just looking around the area and finding the best deal on tuxes was our only choice. This ended up being where most of our money went to. But always look around and find the best deals!
Rings - We choose to pick inexpensive wedding bands that matched which was relatively cheap and well my engagement ring was another story. He choose it and it meant a lot that picked something special.
Invitations - If you don't find someone(friend or family) with a computer. In Microsoft Word they give you an option of invitation templates to choose from. This is fun and you can make it with your own special touches. You can choose more expensive paper or cheap paper but the cost is so much less than having a printing company do it!
Place of ceremony - This is one of my favorite finds....We choose a restaurant that I had grown up going to and the owners were friends of the family. It was a chicken restaurant, sounds a little out there but it is a gorgeous little building and hardwood floors and pillars all through out. Since we got married during winter they had already decorated the inside with white lights and garland. It was perfect. Never throw out the ordinary places.
Place of reception - Just don't have one. We spent some time eating the cake with friends and family but to be honest we wanted to get out of there and be alone!
Cake - Remember it is just a cake. All of it gets eaten. We choose a women who made cakes in our community, not real expensive and it tasted great. Another option is asking if anyone you know makes cakes and maybe they will even make it as a gift for you at no cost!
Music - We had a lot of people we know that can sing and were excited and happy to have them sing in our wedding. They of course did it for free.
Food - Again ask the people around you to cook up a few dishes and have a day where you sit down with them and talk about some things you would like on the menu.
Getting married is beautiful and a memorable event and of course should be special and look special but don't forget that it is all about you and your spouse making a commitment to be together forever. It is about you and your spouse making those vows and promising the rest of your lives to one another. The cake well it will be gone in a flash but you two will begin your new adventure together for the rest of your lives!

There are so many aspects of a wedding that can be done yourself, while still looking great and without getting stressed. Often times, you'll enjoy making things for your wedding and take a certain sense of pride in giving your day that personal touch.
However, there are certain things about your day that should be handled by a professional. One reason is to keep your stress level down-- in some situations, you won't even save that much money by doing things yourself. Another reason is that some services require a certain level of expertise-- you might think that some of these things are easier than they really are.
This list will take you through different wedding categories and how you can best utilize your own versus professional services for your big day.
Wedding DIY Do's:
Makeup
You do your makeup a certain way every day because that is the way that you like to look. I've always found that a makeup artist who doesn't know me makes me look like a completely different person. It's either way too dark or I just don't like the colors on me. I've always been happier doing my own makeup-when I get it professionally done, I usually end up wiping it off and fixing it myself anyway.
Save the Dates
Save the dates are a really fun way to get creative and let your personality shine through. There are a ton of options that can be printed online very quickly and easily, including magnets, postcards, photos, etc. You can also feed cardstock through your own printer and design them your own way.
Gifts/ Favors

Cake

When baking a cake for a large number of people, there is a lot of structural work. Think of a wedding cake as a piece of construction- if the building is not put together properly, it will surely topple over or collapse. If you wouldn't try to build your own house, don't try to make your own wedding cake.

Printing your own invitations sounds like a great idea but it can be a nightmare of a headache. Things go wrong with formatting and you will become stressed out very quickly. Unless you are wearing your hair very simply (all down or just a bobby pin or something like that), you should really consider getting your hair professionally done. You don't want to get frustrated if you aren't able to get it the way you like and the last thing you want to do on your wedding day is become stressed out. It's also a really nice relaxing way to be pampered on your big day.
Of course, if you are on a really tight budget, you can find ways to make these situations work on your own-but if it's simply a matter of prioritizing where you spend your money, I recommend following the outline above. I've listed both the do's and don'ts in order of what I think are most important. So, the top of the Do's list are the easiest things to make DIY projects. The top of the Don'ts list are the things that I would say absolutely do not do yourself.
As you progress down the lists, it's a judgment call. I hope this helps as you begin your wedding planning. It is a fun process that can be as laid back or stressful as you make it, so try to think about what you enjoy, what is most important to you and work around the rest. Enjoy your day!
