How to Make Unique Handmade Wedding Invitations

by Nicola Ray

Your wedding invitations will really set the tone for your wedding day, by creating your own handmade wedding invitations you can convey the style of your wedding with just a few pieces of paper and some embellishments. Using your own imagination, some basic knowledge of invitation layouts and the vast resources offered to you by your local craft store, you can create beautiful, memorable handmade wedding invitations.
Ribbons are a cheap, easy addition to your wedding invitations. They are very versatile and offer you lots of choice. If you're having an outdoor, informal summer wedding, find a red and white checked ribbon, 'picnic-blanket-style' to use as a belly band around your invitation parts. If you're having a more formal spring or winter wedding, use an elegant white ribbon with beaded edges as an accent around the top or bottom of your invitation.
Craft stores will have lots and lots of sparkling embellishments to choose from. On a thick piece of paper, you can sew sequins into a design using some thick thread and a needle; simply thread each sequin onto the needle as it comes onto the top side of the paper. Create words, figures, or simple designs with sparkling sequins. You can also consider using charms to accent photographs or certain words, or you can use glitter for some extra shine.
Beads can be another great way to turn an invitation into artwork. Tie them to certain spots in the invitation to add sparkle, depth or interest. For a wintertime wedding, use red and white beads in a line across the bottom of the invitation. For an autumn wedding, let rich amber, gold, and rust beads dangle from the invitation like a fringe. Do be careful, though, as beads will make your invitation heavier and may affect your postage costs.Choose one or two suitable embellishments for your handmade wedding invitations so that your guests can get a feel for the type of wedding you'll be having. Let your invitations speak to your guests about whether your wedding will be formal, elegant, modern or traditional. You'll have fun making your invitations and you are sure to leave a lasting impression on your guests.
