DIY Wedding Invitations with a Professional Finish

by Nicola Ray

Creating your wedding invitations by hand can save money on a tight wedding budget, but you won't want DIY wedding invitations that look homemade and shabby. Using a few simple ideas, you can transform shabby 'homemade' invites into exclusive 'handmade' invitations.
If you're going to use images on your invitations, be sure that you print them in a high resolution. Set your printer resolution to a 300dpi (dots per square inch) or higher. Otherwise, your images might look grainy or pixelated.
Computer's default settings are usually 72dpi, which won't be high enough to get a really good-quality photo print for your invitations. Be sure, that the imaging program you're using is set to at least 300 dpi. Use this resolution even if you're using graphics instead of photographs.
You'll also get a better print quality if you use high-quality paper. You could use photo paper for the photo images; and thick, smooth paper for the rest of the invitations. Using thin cardstock and flimsy paper is a dead giveaway for an un-professional invite.
To really give your DIY wedding invitations a 'handmade' feel, use embellishments. Head to the scrapbooking aisle at your local craft store to find stickers, stamps and die-cuts that will suit your style. Glitter, charms and beads can give an invitation a three-dimensional look while adding sparkle and shine.
Ribbons are also an excellent embellishment, and they're very versatile. Use a white velvet ribbon as a belly band on your winter wedding invitations, or tie a thin piece of sheer, shimmering ribbon to the top of your spring wedding invitations.
When using embellishments of any kind, be sure not to overdo it. Professional invitations are very simple and elegant, so choose just one or two embellishments for your invitations.
